Quote of the day
“You know that things are changing when you hear Tory MPs in the Members’ tea room talking about whether they could win their seats under AV voting system!”

Good.
The old arguments were won. Thanks to thatcher we became happy consumers in supermarkets. We grew acustomed to having a plethora of choice in how we spent our money and then, later, in how we wanted our public services delivered. That was all, largely, thanks to Conservatives winning the argument for human expression against the centralising, Collectivist Left.
Now, having won that argument and ushered in freedom of choice as the norm, it is bitterly ironic that they oppose it when it comes to voting. I’m sorry but it is abhorrent that governments are elected lacking the support of, usually, 60% of the electorate who are, themselves, merely a reduced subset of the populace. When you have a minority of people selecting rulers, you have a hegemony, not a democracy. And that’s before you get into the rest of our third-world voting shenanigans.
Personally, I want any system that ensures every single MP is supported by at least 50%+1 of the the electorate to some extent. I would like to keep constituencies. But other than that, I’m open as I’m done with being ruled by hegemonies, be they red or blue.
“Personally, I want any system that ensures every single MP is supported by at least 50%+1 of the the electorate to some extent”
That’s still possible with FPTP; you just need to draw the constituencies properly…
@BM – show me how, mathematically.
