Quote of the day

“They can’t attack the science so they attack the chairman. But they won’t sink me. I am the unsinkable Molly Brown. In fact, I will float much higher.”

- Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the IPCC, speaking yesterday in response to criticism of his leadership following the revelation that the IPCC’s claim that Himalayan glaciers could melt away by 2035 was totally unfounded.  Their admission followed a New Scientist article last week that revealed the source of the claim made in a 2007 report by the IPCC was nothing more than a media interview with a scientist conducted in 1999.  Several senior scientists have now said the claim was unrealistic and that the large Himalayan glaciers could not melt in a few decades.  To complete the humiliation, Pachauri had dismissed similar claims by geologist Vijay Kumar Raina in November 2009, saying: “With the greatest of respect this guy retired years ago and I find it totally baffling that he comes out and throws out everything that has been established years ago.” (full story HERE)

  1. He is instigating multiple libel actions as I understand it, against people who have *alleged* that he *has business collections with ‘green firms around the planet* and thus *makes quite a lot of money from spinning AGW*.

Devil’s Kitchen has his number so rather than expose LFAT to further litigation risk, I’ll simply point to a friendly demonic entity who’s already addressed those risks!

  2. I’ve been enjoying DK hound this guy for weeks, the guy sounds rather suspect.

Even my girfriend, who passionately believes in climate change, doesn’t think it’s appropriate for a businessman to be running the IPCC.

  3. I’d be reasonably confident of it being bloody appropriate for his shareholders and investors. If such allegations are borne out. Ahem. Cough…

  4. Well they can hardly attack the science as there isn’t any! The contention that Himalayan Glaciers will/could disappear by 2035 is based upon one telephone conversation back in the 90’s. Even by pseudoscience standards it is a bit lacking.
Probably G.W. Bush wandering about with a set of electric fires!(Well he gets blamed for everything else, so it’s not fair to leave him out is it?)

  5. What goes round comes round.

  6. Perhaps Pachauri is just angling for an honorary doctorate from the University of East Anglia.

  7. That quote is actually quite funny, in a way.

I’ve been asking questions about the science for years – initially because I didn’t understand it and wanted to, and latterly becuase the answers I was initially given were so unpersuasive. My consistent experience has been that if you question the scientific support for AGW, the response is that someone questions either your sanity, or your probity, or your intelligence.

I think we can see why, now. It is that these people simply cannot understand the difference between the scientific conclusions and the personal qualities.

It means that they are advocates, not scientists.

  9. Through my taxes I pay for this arrogant s.o.b!!

When I see quotes like this I wish I could track him down and insert the latest IPCC report where the sun never shines…without the benefit of Fairtrade olive oil!
