Quote of the day
“Nobody calls the BBC ‘Auntie’ any more. ‘Auntie’ was an affectionate name for someone who might have been a trifle prim and stuffy at times, but who was basically reliable and behaved herself with decorum. ‘Auntie’ was not the type of person who stayed in Las Vegas hotels, clocked up taxi rides at £200 a time, or who went to town on expensive lunches and dinners.”
- Madsen Pirie in today’s Telegraph, discussing the revelations about salaries, bonuses and expenses at the BBC. According to figures released yesterday, the BBC is paying its 100 most senior staff over £20 million a year at an average of £199,316, and with bonuses and other entitlements the executives’ average package is more than £214,000 a year – almost 10 times the average British salary. It’s less of an ‘auntie’ – its more like a slightly slutty Scandinavian au pair (as found throughout north London in the early 90s) who you can smoke dope with when no-one’s around and who knowingly wears skirts that show their knickers while feigning total innocence…
Which is definitely more fun but deep down you know it’s not quite ‘proper’!
Errr, not quite what I was expecting as the first comment in response to that post…..
I do always like to surprise!
Shaun – do share!
I need cheering up after a day stuck in my lawyers’ offices in Milan
The BBC is a global organisation and has expenses and salaries to match. it is a massive organisation and should be looked at as if it were a bank. We shouldn’t be surprised at the expenses or salaries. Its par for the course.
I always hated, and still do, BBC DJ’s making lame jokes about ‘Auntie.’ And the BBC canteen as if it were some ageing truckstop caff.
I had BBC as a catering client in the 80’s. Good bit of grub at their place as I recall. Only Ernst and Young was better.
Sure, the BBC is now a huge corporation, and has the expenses of one. What bothers me more is what it actually thinks it does legitimately. It has an agenda which runs contrary to that of the vast majority of us, the viewers and listeners.
It supports a liberal/left agenda, and with its huge size and influence it no longer reports news, it adapts it to suit its own world view.
And those of us who are law abiding, pay yearly for the privilege.
