Quote of the day
“The Lisbon treaty is your work as much as anyone’s. You pushed it through and you told everyone that it really mattered. You’ve been making speeches on the importance of the new job as EU foreign minister. You’ve said it is an essential tool of influence. Yet now — now — you tell me that you don’t actually want to do it yourself. You don’t mind if we get someone less Atlanticist and less pro free trade. It isn’t as important to you that Britain gets the right EU foreign minister as it is that you remain a viable Labour leadership candidate. Well, thank you very much. You created this job. The rest of us didn’t want it. You may not be running away from Labour, but you are running away from the rest of us.”
- Daniel Finkelstein, writing an open letter to David Miliband in today’s Times (full article HERE)

I think Mr Finkelstein is having a little fun at Milliband’s expense here. I cannot believe that the boy secretary was ever in the running for such a job. He is not suited to any role in government, he has no eye for detail, and no understanding of how to properly represent his country abroad, let alone the whole union.
The real question is whether we will ever get to hang Tony Blair for treason, after he gave up so many of our rights and freedoms to the EU in return for the ‘top job’, the EU presidency, which he has been furiously lobbying for this last weekend.
I suspect Miliband is hanging around for the Labour leadership battle rather than sending himself off the EU and effectively abandoning ship (and the party members).
Let’s do the Lisbon Treaty in song.
It might be more palatable that way. Or not.
