Quote of the day
“Al shabaab forced us to wear their type of veil and now they order us to shake our breasts.”
- a Somalian resident called Halima, speaking to Reuters after it emerged that the hardline Islamist group al Shabaab has publicly whipped women for wearing bras – which they say violate Islam by constituting a deception. The insurgent group, which seeks to impose a strict form of sharia Islamic law, amputated a foot and a hand each from two young men accused of robbery earlier this month. They have also banned movies, musical ringtones, dancing at wedding ceremonies and playing or watching soccer. Residents said gunmen had been rounding up any woman seen with a firm bust and then had them publicly whipped by masked men. The women were then told to remove their bras and shake their breasts. Men were not spared the ‘moral cleansing’, as any man caught without a beard was been publicly whipped. The group’s hardline interpretation of Islamic law has shocked many Somalis, who are traditionally moderate Muslims. Some residents, however, apparently give the insurgents credit for restoring order to the regions under their control. Al Shabaab control large swathes of south and central Somalia.

“They have also banned … musical ringtones, dancing at wedding ceremonies and playing or watching soccer.”
I gotta be honest, and this really does surprise me, but much as discriminating against firm breasted women appalls me, what they said there sounds kinda appealing!
My feelings toward Shari’ah Law can only be expressed in song.
D
Ok, the ringtones can go, but no religion has the right to rob entire nations of embarrassing relatives on the dancefloor at weddings.
I wonder how long it’ll last until civil unrest starts – or we’re having to fight another war because of another breeding ground of intolerant fascist muslims??
What do we want? The right to humiliate ourselves at weddings! When do we want it? Hang on, my phone’s ringing to ‘Dancing Queen’…
Ok, I can live without the embarrasing dancing at weddings, but there is a serious point here.
A few months ago, a Dutch politician was banned from coming to this country because he made a film which highlights the extreme ways in which the Koran is used to justify acts of intolerance, violence and repression.
What does that say about us as a country if we allow the debate about Islam to be shut down by the ‘liberal left’ establishment, the courts, the government and the BBC? Are we in collective denial, or is it just easier not to ask the questions that need to be asked until it becomes a fighting matter as it it now is in Afganistan and Pakistan.
@Tony E – Tony, are the bbc not *allowing* that debate by hosting Griffin on Question Time? While his party is vile, certain issues will be raised that do merit discussion (although not national-socialist solutions).
Also, Geert Wilders was allowed in to the UK today following a case earlier this week, on the same happy day for freedom that Carter-Ruck botched a super-injunction to restrain the reporting of Parliament.
Have they not heard of banana flavour shakes
@Shaun Pilkington – ROFL!
There aren’t many repeat-arrests for theft though.
@Joe Public –
True, but that is because the thief will starve to death.
They should be more merciful and just behead them, sharia laws (of all schools) are disgusting.
