@ LFATI hadn't thought about it like that - Howard vs Brown. I wasn't a big fan of Michael Howard but he surely can't have been as bad as Brown.

I can not stand brown, but as you say could M.H. have been as bad as Brown,,,,
Well yes M.H. was / is a devious evil little **** and Widdecombe is right there is something of the night of him,
Howard is the reason I (as a conservative party member for years and years, and still am) stopped voting at all, because Howard and new labour mark 1,the Major government banned pistol shooting.

Brown is by reputation a control freak and I think you're right to lay the blame squarely at his own feet for this. It didn't have to end up like this - Smeargate, the economy, the deceit, the bottled election - he's responsible for the lot.

Rory rather lets Brown off lightly to suggest he's a victim of his own dedication to the job.

If he's a victim of anything, it's his own deviousness. He clawed his way into the job by the only means he could, destabilising Blair from within. What keeps him awake at night is not the shape the country is in, but his 'legacy' and the thought that one of his collegues is likely to knife him the way he knifed Blair.

BTW, isn't it strange that a lot of what Micheal Howard said at the last election (and got roundly bashed for) has turned out to be true. Country spending too much, Public services wasteful, Vote Blair get Brown, Immigration is too high etc. I wonder whether the voters of Britian now regret not voting for him instead of Blair, at least they would have got what they voted for.
