As an exiled Londoner who occasionaly escorts foreign visitors there, I feel more awkward about the phone-box advertisements than any other unpleasant aspect of London life in the 21st century, and it’s very difficult to explain sensibly – even if I knew the full story.
I used to live in Austria and brothels are legal there, so one finds them not only in Vienna but in almost all towns, even quite small ones, and in rural settings, too. From my enquiries I found that almost no one is embarrassed about them, accepting them as a fact of life. It is legal to advertise them, though I noticed that the “ads” are both discreet and sensitively placed.
Without touching on the moral aspects, I do wonder, if we tried to do that, whether we’d get an urban Blackpool instead of sophisticated hotel-style arrangements.
