Quote of the day

“It didn’t happen a lot, I was much more angry with him about the fact that we had not properly checked the expense claim than I was about the film.”

- Jacqui Smith, former Home Secretary, who has revealed that she and her husband argued about his use of pornography before her expenses claim for two blue movies was made public.Miss Smith’s husband, Richard Timney, was forced to make an excruciating public apology in March after it emerged he had watched two £5 adult films on pay-per-view television and claimed the cost back on parliamentary expenses.  In an interview with the Guardian newspaper, Miss Smith admitted she knew about her husband’s watching habits before the scandal broke. Asked if she watched the sex entertainment with him, she said: “No, no, no. In fact, I would argue with him. I would say to him I think porn is wrong because of my feminist background.” In the interview, she admitted that she would be remembered for being the first woman in the role, and for the expenses scandal, as well as admitting that if a general election were held tomorrow she would “definitely not” be re-elected by her Redditch constituency.

  1. “Asked if she watched the sex entertainment with him…”

    Gaaah! Mindbleach needed!

Rumours that the Grauniad did her a small kindness by editing the rest of that sentence out (“It didn’t happen a lot, I was much more angry with him about the fact that we had not properly checked the expense claim than I was about the film. I mean, God, I’ve seen myself in a mirror. Who could blame him?”) are, of course, unsubstantiated.

Perhaps someone could give their editor’s mobile a ring and take a stab at the network default for their messages?

  3. Yet again Denis Thatcher is proven correct: It is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!

  4. I have no idea what she was thinking when she made that statement to the Guardian – talk about digging an even deeper hole for yourself and your family.

  5. Actually, she’s not “Miss Smith”, she’s “Ms Smith”.

  6. The thing that is most irritating about this isn’t the porn film – it’s that we are paying for the top-price Virgin Media TV package. Basic broadband, telephone and TV is £28. So for some reason, it is necessary for the performance of JS’ ministerial duties to have access to Sky 1, G.O.L.D and Sky Sports etc. Yeah.
Oh, and I bet there’s been other non-porn films we’ve paid for too.
