Quote of the day
“It is not a state secret that he wears Speedo swimming trunks, for goodness sake let’s grow up.”
- David Miliband, Foreign Secretary, who said that photographs of Sir John Sawers, the new head of MI6, that appeared on Facebook are not a threat to national security. He described Sir John as an “outstanding professional” and denied that the details on the social networking website, which have since been removed, would compromise his career. Lady Shelley Sawers, Sir John’s wife, disclosed details on Facebook including the location of the London flat used by the couple and the whereabouts of their three children and of Sir John’s parents, The Mail on Sunday reported. Lady Sawers put no privacy protection on her account, allowing any of Facebook’s 200 million users in the open-access “London” network to see the entries. Senior politicians such as Ed Davey MP said the security lapse raised concerns about Sir John’s ability to take up his post as chief of the Secret Intelligence Service this November, giving him responsibility for Britain’s overseas spying operations.

Very disappointed by Millipede’s comments this morning. If he does not understand the risks that the head of any government agency, let alone MI6, takes by laying his private life open to terrorists then he really shouldn’t be in the job.
I should imagine that Mrs Sawyers is feeling rather foolish this morning and will be much more careful in future. However, the damage has been done, and John Sawyers and his family should be changing their family circumstances and arrangements if he wants to take up his post, for their safety if not for his.
I know, this really was stupidity of the highest order. Utterly indefensible, yet Miliband still managed to find a way to demonstrate his political ignorance.
Oh I´ve just seen his declarations on television. I had a good laugh
“…for goodness sake let’s grow up”
Oh, how we all wish that politicians, especially Miliband’s own colleagues, would follow his advice!
