Quote of the day
“The deer was able to move and had left the area by the time the police arrived.”
- Wendy Wang, Google Street View operations manager, after a google car not only ran over a deer but also captured the incident on a set of photographs later published on Street View. Photographs taken for Google’s Street View service showed the fawn dashing out of the way before being mown down on a road in New York state in the US. A second image shows the animal sprawled on the road with the shadow of the camera-mounted car passing by. The sequence was initially available to anyone who searched for images of the Five Points Road in Rush, New York but Google took the pictures down after several users clicked to report them to administrators. Although stunned, the deer managed to stagger to its feet and ran off before the local police arrived.

As the driver put away his jar of redcurrant sauce with a disappointed sigh….
A mate of mine spent a couple of years ranching in Wyoming; he bought me a book – a guide to roadkill (by silhouette) with cooking instructions…
By silhouette? Isn’t that somewhat…variable…with roadkill?
I would have thought that roadkill occasionally spreads out over large-ish areas with variable amounts of bloods and guts (if you’ll excuse the mental image) – not sure how much use a silhouette would be.
It worked by approximating what an animal would look like if squashed flat by a 16-wheel truck…
Tell me they didn’t back up the photos with a few quick ‘trials’….
Anyone seen the roadkill toys site,aw so aweet an cuddly.Ive been hoping for at least one for christmas but no luck so far.
I remember a biology practical at uni infamously named the ‘roadkill practical’, which was exactly what it said on the tin! The year before one group actually got a deer. I got a rabbit and a squirrel with a very flattened head but one group got something that I could never quite figure out – a seal’s head.
1) how did that get on the road?
2) where was the rest of it?
Perhaps Google Street has the answer?
Candid: you know why you’re advised not to stick your head out of car windows or trains while moving at speed? Well, nobody told the seal, obviously!
