  1. This is a replay of the tanker protests of some years ago, not a ‘winter of discontent’. And not that I care, is based on a blatant misquoting of Brown’s ‘jobs for British worker’s speech’.

Either the strikers believe in the free market or they don’t, and have to make up their minds – like the BNP.

Nissan and Honda and BMW and the rest ‘won’ the contract to become the British car industry in the same way that this Italian contractor won this contract.

What this really demonstrates is the need for equal pay across europe for equal work, which would make this kind of divisive undercutting obsolete.

  2. This seems to be the only reference with context of the ‘British Jobs for British workers’ quote.

“It is time to train British workers for the British jobs that will be available over the coming few years and to make sure that people who are inactive and unemployed are able to get the new jobs on offer in our country,”

Made to the GMB Conference in June 2007.
Have both the strikers and journalists gone mad?

  3. British jobs for British workers is a misquote of our benighted Overlord, Brown, is it? Really? You youself quote it as:

“It is time to train British workers for the British jobs that will be available over the coming few years and to make sure that people who are inactive and unemployed are able to get the new jobs on offer in our country,”

And now the key phrase. The soundbite, as it were:

train British workers for the British jobs

So, in fairness, its the word ‘train’ that diffentiates it for you. Would this training involve earning 40-60% less because that’s the only training that would’ve done the trick in this case. Seriously – look at the wage stats.

There’s no way to look at this as another fantastic example of Brown blowing the dog-whistle moments before being savaged by a 200lb Rottweiler named ‘Events’.

  4. *sorry typo city! As the spin-doctor says, what I *meant* to say was:

There’s no way to look at this apart from as another fantastic example of Brown blowing the dog-whistle moments before being savaged by a 200lb Rottweiler named ‘Events’.

  5. Or as a classic right wing reaction to capitalism in crisis.
    Very historical.
