Quote of the day

“Jesus wasn’t hermaphrodite, neither was he a girl.”

- Steve Goddard, co-editor of the Christian website Ship of Fools, responding to a reader’s comment about the possibility of changing the well-known refrain of O Come All Ye Faithful – “O come let us adore Him” – to “O come in adoration” for fear that the original was sexist.  Steve’s website is running a competition to find the worst example of a rewritten carol after some churches decided to make them more ‘politically correct’.

  1. We shall have to rework Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin’s classic ‘Sisters are doing it for themselves’, I imagine. ‘Persons of unspecified gender are doing it for themselves’?

Behind every great person, there has to be a… great person.

  2. There really is no end to this nonsense. One unspecified individual somewhere in the country claims to be offended and hundreds of years of tradition are wiped out in an instant.

  3. Sod offense. Since when was it liberal to allow somebodies ignorance or prejudice to enforce conformity? Of course the historical Jesus was male. A more interesting question is “is the Word of God male”? (You don’t have to believe to engage in the hermeneutics.

Often with these things, there’s been no complaint at all. It’s just that some council numpty has decided there might be.

Still, it’s often the only time they show any initiative….

  5. Ha, innovation in public services isn’t always a good thing.

  6. I am totally against changing the words of Carols to make them PC!

  7. Delighted to hear it. I’m so glad that Boris Johnson told City Hall to sod off when they tried to rename the Christmas celebration as something ridiculous like ‘multi faith celebratory period’.
