“This discussion of homosexuality we are having in the church is not so significant because of what it says about homosexuality, but because of what it says about God.”

- Rt Rev Gene Robinson, the openly gay Bishop of New Hampshire, who was forced to halt his address in London yesterday after a demonstrator repeatedly called him a heretic

  1. What’s that, then? That God doesn’t seem to be providing any answers to modern discussions?

It’s all just a little bit silly, isn’t it. A bunch of otherwise intelligent people arguing over whether one verse of the Bible is more significant than the other. It reminds me of the Cat’s religion in Red Dwarf, where an epic war was begun over whether the hats in the promised land ought to be blue or red.

Except, of course, that the Church actually put people’s livlihoods and wellbeing at stake when they have their rows.

    Grrr.

  2. Letters From A Tory

There’s a part of me that really doesn’t care too much about the whole thing, but it’s fascinating to watch this debate as there are clear divisions appearing in the Church over whether religious texts should be interpreted literally or whether a more liberal interpretation of religious texts should now be applied in the modern era.
