Quote of the day

“Tom Harris’s breathtaking comments raise Labour’s arrogance and complacency to a whole new level.”

- Conservative Treasury Spokesman Philip Hammond, responding to remarks by Labour minister Tom Harris who says that everyone hit by the credit crunch should stop being “so bloody miserable”

  1. To be fair, it might help if everyone was a bit more jovial about the economy.

Or just happier in general. A little? Anybody?

  2. I know it’s a sad thing when we start agreeing with Labour politicians, but Tom Harris’s blog post on not being miserable is actually quite good – but overshadowed by comment #5, by ‘Graham Jones – Internet Psychologist

Ooooh I can feel a blog post coming on…

I accept that the media have really rammed the credit crunch down our throats and it might not be a disaster on the scale of the early 1990’s, but I don’t think anyone can begrudge people feeling pessimistic when surrounded by mortgage withdrawals, house prices falling, economy slowing down etc.

    “Those miserable skits.”

“You never see Goths at the beach on a hot day do you? Cheer up goths. It ain’t all bad. I mean you might never get stabbed.

  5. Well I’ve spent all day off walking in the peak district, but have finally got round to writing that blog post I felt coming along

I don’t think that the majority of people are wrong to be unhappy – there’s a large amount of things to be unhappy about. To a purely materialistic mind, though, we’re so much better off now than we have been in previous years. One thing that’s often forgotten in these kinds of discussions, though, is that everyone was unhappy back then, too!

The truth is we could live in a perfect utopia and there would be many people who complained about the shade of blue in the sky and the way those other people over there are sat on slightly greener more luscious grass – and most of them would be British. Happiness is a virtue found somewhat lacking within our borders.

So if people were a little happier about life in general I couldn’t find it within myself to call that a bad thing.
