Thought for the day
First came the health and safety legislation that prevented us from climbing a ladder without the appropriate training. Now comes the litigation culture that means you can sue your employer for not giving you the training necessary to climb up a ladder.

Happened to me.
The chap in charge of ‘Ladder Training’ and ‘Risk Assessment: working from height’
fell from the ladder….and then went to accident tribunal as he hadn’t signed the training form himself. Also the ladder was possibly faulty.
Only the day before the individual who fell had signed the ladder off as ‘checked, all complete and in working order’
I argued that a bit of personal responsibility should come into play.
I lost by a mile..
O/T but seeing as Mr King is writing to Mr Brown to explain the state of inflation in the country, I was wondering if you, with you letter writing experience, could write to Mr Brown, asking if he could write to Mr King to explain his governments inflationary policies.
Personal responsibility in the workplace? Wishful thinking Bill, but we can dream.
And John Redwood already beat me to the letters on inflation!

“I argued that a bit of personal responsibility should come into play.”
Ah, if only….
I think a bit of personal responsibility might be needed here though…
You just couldn’t resist, could you Julia.
What’s the betting that, rather than sacking Blears, the government will commission a review to look at the security of data held on ministers’ computers in light of this unbelievable incompetence?
At this stage, I think Gordon wouldn’t dare to sack a Minister even if they were caught standing over a corpse with the knife in their hand…
We occasionally do some work for a national sheltered-housing provider, which involves putting cable around the skirting board, and have been doing this for manyyears. Then a few weeks ago I received the form on working at a height, and asked to complete and return. I immediately phoned them and said, ‘We don’t do any work at a height for you!’. ‘We know, but just fill it in anyway’. So I did, and explained in writing, that we did no work at height. So hopefully we will continue to get the work.
Bonkers, isn’t it!
Also a couple of young lads who live closely to us, came round looking for work, by clearing the gutters in our bungalow. I had to reject them because of the possibility that they might sue, if they fell off my ladder!
Was Britain ever made Great, by such nonsensical legislation!
They should have employed someone taller!
Besides, why is a 70 year old still allowed to work as a caretaker. He should have retired years ago unless he’s working in the private sector!
