Of all the ways to save our education system from the slippery slope that it is already on, I find it hard to believe that the most effective solution to this crisis is allowing McDonalds to offer A-levels.

It seems quite sensible to me. Unlike ministers, McDonalds will not want standards to slip over time as customers always expect a good quality service.
Trainees are also paid on the job and will be subject to far better discipline than some of the rowdies staying on at school with an EMA until they are 18!
However, I’m not sure anyone would be able to go up to Oxford with A-levels from McDonalds, Fly BE and Pizza Hut even if they do get ‘A’ grades!
Paying people to train is not a problem, but the fact that McDonalds can put whatever they want into this qualification (as can other employers in the scheme) means that there is no independent verification of how useful or effective their qualification is.
Such a joke.
I like the new layout! This story is an example of corporate lobbying. These companies are doing the government’s job for them, thus saving them money. In return, the government overlook the massive health risks and unethical practices that are synonymous with McD’s.
How can it be a joke? It will simply begin a free market in qualifications, which will then provide greater variety for those who require people with various skills.
If I wanted a shift manager, I would rather take someone with a McDonalds shift manager qualification, who by definition would have work and life experience, as well as being able to demonstrate practical experience of their knowledge, than some dippy sixth former with sod all practical experience in their subject.
A qualification from McDonalds is no guarantee that the shift manager could do their job in another firm or industry. There has to be some comparability in terms of standards – how would anyone know what McDonalds required from their shift managers or what they taught them?
You can’t let employers go labelling people with job titles at will – it will lead to complete confusion in any industry.
