Brown buries his head in the sand in Iraq and Afghanistan

Dear Gordon Brown,

Outrageous.  Absolutely outrageous.  In the face of almost daily criticism over the funding and support for our armed forces (including THIS MORNING), you have the nerve to ignore some of the top military chiefs in this country.  As Chancellor of the Exchequer you continued to leave our forces underfunded and overstretched and now you turn round to our loyal troops and say that you have every intention of making sure they are fully equipped.

I think I’m going to be sick.

  1. In Britain we have a great history of the leaders leading from the front in battle and thus having respect and commanding respect from troops and the public at large. Our monarchy, with few exceptions, have some military experience and again respect the importance of the forces but our leader in governemnet hasn’t got a clue.

Now the power is in parliament rather then the monarchy the tradition of military service should extend to MPs and Mr. Brown in particular. The people may finally have respect for Mr. Brown and he would understand the difficulties the forces face in underfunding and a general lack of kit.

Interesting angle. I think the Royal Family becoming involved in the Armed Forces is nice in theory, but the debacle over Prince Harry going/not going to Iraq turned out to be very damaging and exposed the caution over putting key public figures in dangerous situations.

  3. I take your point but becasue the royals are based on heredity then they are not easily replaced whereas a democratically voted PM wouldn’t have to rely on brothers or sons for succession and therefore this adds an element of dispensibility!
